“Just as the 2010 Census has documented our increasingly diverse population, so too the Survey of Business Owners demonstrates the increasing diversity of U.S. business ownership,” says Tom Mesenbourg, deputy director of the U.S. Census Bureau. According to a recent survey from the U.S. Census Bureau, minority-owned firms generated $1.0 trillion and more than doubled the rate of growth of all U.S. businesses. The states with the greatest number of minority-owned firms are California, Florida, and Texas – where Houston-based Al-Razaq Computing Services, a minority-owned firm, is contributing to this growth.
Al-Razaq Computing Services is an operations management and business systems integration firm that provides resources management, information technology support, and financial management services to government, corporate, and education clients. Recently, the privately held firm was awarded an acquisition and business support services contract worth a potential $99 million at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama. A total of 15 firms submitted proposals for this award. Al-Razaq currently holds similar contracts at NASA’s Ames Research Center, NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Washington, D.C. Prior contracts were held at the IRS, Texas Department of Transportation, and several universities in Texas. Al-Razaq’s future growth strategy includes pursuing new clients in other federal agencies.
The brainchild behind the company’s growth is Idrisa M. Iscandri, president and founder of Al-Razaq. A naturalized American from Sierra Leone, Iscandri founded the company in 1993 with only one employee, being himself. Today, Al-Razaq employs 200 professionals in offices in Alabama, California, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and overseas in Freetown, Sierra Leone. “Our remarkable growth can only be attributed to one single motto: can’t is not an option,” says Iscandri.
