Today you most likely gained information that you did not know yesterday. You read a newspaper, watched a YouTube video or Googled a question and found several blogs or websites giving you the answer. In your lifetime, you have gained more information than your parents, who have gained more information than their parents. Why? Integrated telepresence and video conferencing provider, BrightCom CEO, Bob McCandless believes it is because of the way in which information technology has impacted the evolution of human communication and that video conferencing is the newest technology to help further drive human knowledge.
IT and Human Communication Throughout History
In a recent interview, Mr. McCandless spoke on the history of telepresence and video conferencing; addressing the question of how information technology has impacted the course of human communication. According to Mr. McCandless, “the most impactful information technology is the one that can best store and communicate ideas” and that because of this, “information technology is the most important thing in the growth of human evolution and technology.”
“If you look back to early Homo sapiens living in caves, fields and grass huts, ” stated Mr. McCandless, “how did they move beyond the pre-technology state? I think the way that was done was through information technology, through storing and communicating the ideas of people that came before.”
Mr. McCandless feels that as communication evolved through cave paintings and oral histories to papyrus, hieroglyphics and other advanced distribution systems, people did not have to accomplish things through trial and error. Instead people could learn from what was previously communicated and move forward with that knowledge at a faster pace.
“Each step humans have taken in storing and communicating information, means that there is less time spent relearning, ” said Mr. McCandless. “For example, if you look at today, children graduating school already know more than most kids have throughout the course of human history. This is because our schools have an amazing array of technology for storing information including text books, and internet. Now many schools have video conferencing to gather live and recorded information from more people at a faster rate.”
Telepresence To Advance Communications
As telepresence and video conferencing solutions are increasingly adopted by both businesses and consumers, it is safe to say that this new form of storing and communicating information will help progress human knowledge even faster than before.
Mr. McCandless states, “It is interesting, if you look at 90% of the information that we will know 50 years in the future, of that information, 90% well be learned in the next 50 years, so the rate we are gathering that information is increasing very quickly, which means that our ability to store it and communicate it needs to increase as well, otherwise, it will take us longer to learn what people knew last year.”
Telepresence and video conferencing are allowing more people to instantly connect from anywhere around the world meaning that their information can be transferred faster than by phone or E:. For example, BrightCom's telepresence conferencing infrastructure, the Visual Collaboration System, provides instant and life-like video connection coupled with a higher level of collaboration with real-time data sharing, cooperative markup on documents, images and other media as well as cooperative web browsing.
“As people begin to communicate through these types of video based mediums, the ability to access more people and store their information in live and recorded conferences will provide a faster channel for higher levels of learning and knowledge transfer. Ultimately it will spread ideas, foster innovation and advance our way of life, ” concluded Mr. McCandless.
Mr. McCandless is featured in a video series entitled, Telepresence and Video Conferencing: Past, Present and Future. Stay tuned for the second part of the first three videos regarding the history of video and telepresence where Mr. McCandless will discuss the evolution of live and pre-recorded television and radio as well as the early beginnings of telepresence.
