As reported by Jacob Bunge, the New Jersey-based company on Friday told customers that its practice of holding split-second auctions to trade on unfilled stock orders would cease at the close of business Monday, after the Securities and Exchange Commission this past week decided to take a second look at the practice.
The practice of exchanges "flashing" orders involves giving market participants a moment to act on unfilled trades before they are electronically routed on to another exchange to be filled. The strategy ignited controversy in the summer of 2009 when politicians and lawmakers, as well as rival exchanges, raised concerns that some traders were gaining an unfair information advantage over others.
Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. and BATS Global Markets quickly dropped their own versions. Big Board parent NYSE Euronext never offered the function. Direct Edge was the holdout, maintaining that the practice helped investors get better prices on their trades. The company, which achieved exchange status a year ago, has said that such trading accounts for a minimal amount of overall business.
