Scottsdale, AZ, United States, 2011/02/17 - Independent assessment of telemedicine exam cameras shows TotalExam beats the competition, even home video cameras, digital still cameras and a security camera system.

In a review of patient examination cameras used for telemedicine conducted by the Telehealth Technology Assessment Center (TTAC), GlobalMedia’s TotalExam™ Camera received the top scores based on reliability, mechanics and ease of use.
The head-to-head comparison with the more expensive AMD-2500 camera gave TotalExam a higher rating in all three categories. TotalExam also finished with higher scores than home video cameras the TTAC tested from Canon, Insignia, Panasonic and Sony; a Panasonic 10 megapixel digital still camera; and the GE Home Monitor, a security camera system.
The TTAC summary says the simplicity of TotalExam is a strong suit. The single-purpose design makes the TotalExam “easy to connect, configure and use in a patient examination,” whereas camcorders and digital cameras “typically require two to four additional steps when attempting to view a paused or ‘frozen’ image, have cables that interfere with holding or using the camera while sending out live feeds, and require the use of additional lighting for macro or intraoral imaging.”
TTAC found that, overall, the images from TotalExam “were superior to images from camcorders and digital cameras when viewed through live feeds.”
The 5.5 inch (140mm) TotalExam camera weighs only eight ounces (229 grams). It is about the size of a dry erase marker and is designed to be held like one during patient exams. The onboard LED light carousel allows the clinician to choose one of three brightness settings. TotalExam combines dual-focus, freeze-frame capture and electronic Skin Tone Balance in one unit for a variety of medical applications. It comes with a derm hood and an initial supply of disposable touch collars for getting crystal clear closeups of skin and eyes that can be stored and forwarded. An included tongue depressor adaptor that accepts standard tongue depressors snaps on to TotalExam for intraoral images.
