Prime Minister Phan Van Khai is the first Vietnamese leader has come to the United States since the Vietnam War ended in 1975. Vietnam Airlines with this agreement becomes the 8th announced customer for the 787 in December 2004.
Vietnam Airlines plans to use the 787-8 to expand its route system and to replace some existing airplanes. The 787-8 Dreamliner will carry around 223 passengers in a tri-class configuration on routes of 8,500 nautical miles (15,700 kilometers). The airplane will use 20 percent less fuel for comparable missions than any similarly sized airplane and will also travel at speeds similar to today's fastest wide bodies, Mach 0.85.
About Vietnam Airlines
In April 1989, the airline was established as a state enterprise, and in 1996 Vietnam Airlines Corporation was formed, bringing together several service companies with the airline at its core. The corporation is run by a six-seat management board whose members are appointed by the prime minister.
