The worst consequences of the crisis have passed and the belief in a positive future has returned.
The financial crisis hit the Danish hotel industry hard, and Ascot Hotel in central Copenhagen was no exception. During the difficult years Ascot Hotel survived thanks to its loyal guests, who choose its central location when travelling for business. The present day Ascot Hotel is now expanding with new rooms and is confident about the future.
According to Managing Director David Olsen, the hotel has benefited from its location in the heart of Copenhagen, close to the Town Hall:
“There is no doubt in my mind that our location in the centre of Copenhagen has helped us to retain our guests throughout the financial crisis, and we are now experiencing the first signs of a brighter future with increased guest numbers.”
Ascot Hotel is increasing its accommodation by approximately 10% with 15 new rooms, taking the total number of rooms from 175 to 190. This is an expression of a strong belief in the economic upturn.
David Olsen, Managing Director, continues: “We notice that not only are business travellers more prosperous than they were during the crisis, but that our private guests are also returning. The hotel is situated next to Tivoli and Wallmans and families, who want a weekend experience visit us again and again.”
In 2009 the Danish hotel industry collectively suffered from a deficit of 312 million DKK and is currently experiencing a two-digit revenue decline per hotel room. In their 2010 report, The Danish Industry Analysis estimates that 73 out of 267 hotel companies may become insolvent during 2011, which equates to one out of every four hotel companies.
This demonstrates how the financial crisis continues to take a toll on the hotel industry, but there are some rays of light. The Ascot Hotel in the middle of Copenhagen is enjoying the fledgling recovery in Copenhagen, where house prices are also on their way up again.
As Ascot Hotel enjoys the resurgence of prosperity in Copenhagen, they expect more guests in the coming years. Additionally, the strong Swedish economy has resulted in more Swedes enjoying holidays in Copenhagen, and they prefer to stay in downtown Copenhagen, close to Tivoli.
Before the financial crisis hit, Ascot Hotel rebuilt and was approved as a four star hotel with conference facilities, fitness rooms, sun beds, and three quality restaurants. Post-financial crisis, Ascot Hotel continues its improvements with the goal of strengthening its position as a modern four star quality hotel in central Copenhagen.
Ascot Hotel was originally the old public baths in Copenhagen, and they keep this history alive by offering wellness and fitness stays for business travellers, as well as parents and holidaymakers who need luxury and relaxation.
After the tough years of the financial crisis, the first signs of recovery in the hotel industry are visible. With its prime location in the middle of Copenhagen, Ascot Hotel is one of the shining stars, which is now daring to invest in increased revenue.
