Wirelessly enabled in-hospital patient monitors are expected to grow at an annual rate of 13 percent over the next four years according to the latest estimates from Greystone Research Associates.
“The benefits of wireless bedside and in-patient ambulatory monitors will prompt many current facilities to include additional wireless monitors to meet the need for new equipment,” says George Perros, Greystone Research Managing Director. “The flexibility of wireless becomes a bit addictive for caregivers who’ve experienced it, particularly where patient movement is common.”
Facility infrastructure is a major factor in the decision to move toward wireless. A robust wireless architecture with adequate access points is key to the successful deployment and use of wireless patient monitors. Dead spots and blackout events can lead to frustration and mistrust on the part of caregivers. “There is definitely a credibility issue with respect to reliability for any facility considering wireless patient monitors,” adds Perros. “Hospitals successfully using wireless monitors have ironed out the wrinkles in their wireless network coverage and are less hesitant to expand wireless monitor usage.”
Key enablers of wireless in-patient monitor growth will be the increasingly robust network architectures available from leading providers such as Cisco. The ability of suppliers to market their offerings at the central monitoring station or system level is an important path to future same-facility unit monitor sales, since interoperability and optimization issues can be minimized via a strategy of same-vendor purchases.
Greystone’s Wireless In-Patient Monitors and Monitoring Systems study examines wireless technology and deployment issues, analyzes wireless monitor product segments and market factors, and assesses in-patient monitoring applications, and provides market forecasts.
