The transport system is the first urban train network of its kind in the Middle East and passenger numbers have been high since the first stations opened in September 2009. So, when health and safety managers were looking at ways of controlling the crowds of people waiting to buy tickets, they turned to Tensator.
So far, 1,250 Advanced Tensabarrier® retractable posts with satin chrome finish and black webbing have been installed at ticket counters at 21 stations, some of which are still to officially open along the Red Line - the first phase of the Metro system.
Initially feedback suggests that the barriers are helping to control up to 120,000 passengers a day at some of the Red Line’s busiest stations, including Mall of the Emirates, Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and Deira City Centre.
A spokesperson for The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) commented: “We have invested heavily in safety measures onboard the trains and in stations, and Tensator has played a major part in our plans.
“With thousands of passengers making journeys on a daily basis, it’s important that they’re able to purchase tickets both quickly and safely, and the Tensabarriers® have proven to be a cost effective solution for us.”
Tensator’s partnership with Dubai Metro looks set to continue with additional stations due to open throughout the rest of the year and the second phase, the Green Line, expected to launch in 2011.
Abdel Aziz Rahal, general manager of Tensator FZE added: “We are already looking at adding extra products, such as sign holders, into stations to help guide passengers and further enhance their travelling experience.
“Everyone at Tensator is thrilled to be working on such an innovative and exciting project as the Dubai Metro, and we look forward to continuing this working relationship as the network expands.”
