While suppliers of prefillable syringes (PFS) continue to compete for customers and market share in a sector that is experiencing double-digit annual unit growth, the leading companies are already quietly maneuvering for the lead in the next major PFS battleground – PFS constructed of plastic rather than glass. To date, plastic PFS have made significant inroads in EMS injectables, a segment dominated by Hospira’s Ansyr plastic PFS product line. Now, as materials technology continues to advance, market sector participants are targeting mainstream therapeutic drugs.
Medical plastics manufacturers have turned to new materials such as cyclic olefin copolymers (COCs) to replace the polypropylene typically used for non-prefillable disposable syringes, for prefilled applications. COCs and other new plastics offer high heat resistance and a low level of extractables and leachables, and are less permeable to water. Because of their inert surface and break resistance these syringes are considered suitable for use in the demanding area of cytostatics and biopharmaceutics.
Because of the technology capabilities required to successfully qualify a new plastic prefillable syringe, it’s not uncommon for syringe developers to partner with leading materials companies. Examples of such alliances include Gerresheimer’s partnership with Taisei Kato for ClearJect and West’s collaboration with Daikyo for Crystal Zenith plastic PFS.
More information on prefillable syringes can be found in a comprehensive report, researched and prepared by Greystone Associates.
