During a tour of the facilities, Executive Vice President Kai Kamossa informed the Minister President and the accompanying members of the Landtag (Assembly of German State Governments), mayors and journalists about the importance of turbocharching systems from Gommern for the vehicle industry. Engine manufacturers and operators of vehicle fleets benefit from these systems through higher engine outputs and consequently lower CO2-emissions.

Climate-protecting mobility of people and goods is one of the global megatrends. Especially in the emerging markets of Asia and South America, traffic-induced emissions are dramatically on the rise. Governments are putting climate protection highly on their political agenda and are introducing worldwide emission standards.

Turbocharging systems take up a technological key position when it comes to achieving such emission goals in commercial vehicle applications. As one of the world’s leading suppliers of drive technology, Voith has recognized the potential of this trend at an early stage and focused its activities correspondingly.

With exhaust turbochargers for trucks and buses as well as TurboCompound systems from its location in Gommern, Voith is making a contribution to utilizing energy in exhaust emissions. The potential can be demonstrated by the example of a truck diesel engine: only 44 percent of the energy in the fuel is actually transmitted to the wheels. The remainder are heat and friction losses. Nearly 30 percent are lost through exhaust gases.

This is where Voith turbocharging systems come in. In the so-called TurboCompound, the exhaust emissions with a temperature of nearly 550°C drive a further turbine after the exhaust turbocharger. As a result, up to 100 HP of additional engine output are generated.

Kai Kamossa was able to showcase the commercial advantages of the TurboCompound to the Minister President by a simple calculation: ”A truck with an annual mileage of 160 000 kilometers and an average consumption of 35 to 40 liters per 100 kilometer can save more than 1 000 liters of diesel per year, depending on the operating profile,” so the Executive Vice President of Voith Turbo Aufladungssysteme.

The young company has been developing turbocharging systems for diesel engines in Gommern under the umbrella of the Voith Group since 2006. The production of TurboCompound systems started in 2009.

At its Gommern location near Magdeburg covering approximately 15 000 square meters, Voith currently employs 153 employees, with a 15-percent share of apprentices. The ISO-certified company (quality and eco-management) ensures the high quality of its products with state-of-the-art manufacturing and assembly technologies.

Voith Turbo (voithturbo.com), the specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications, as well as for ship propulsion systems, is a Group Division of Voith AG.

Voith (voith.com) is setting the standard in the paper, energy, mobility, and service markets. Established on January 1, 1867, Voith is now one of the largest family-owned businesses in Europe, with 39 000 employees, 5.1 billion euro in sales, and over 280 locations worldwide. Voith is an official partner of the initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas".
