The ESS project offers the possibility to the interested stakeholders of getting an impression of the progress of work. A first field test and demonstration of the system to come will take place on April 28th 2010 at the airfield base Bengener Heide near Bad Neuenahr in Germany.
The field trial shall demonstrate feasibility at an early point in system development. The underlying concept will be illustrated by applying the ESS system to a concrete scenario. The trial version of the ESS consists of data collection tools and the prototypical ESS-portal. The management of a hypothetical emergency scenario to be simulated refers to an explosion at the airfield Bengener Heide following the dumping of a truck carrying toxic material.
A mobile command center will be established in the airfield and shall receive data from an ad hoc video and sensors data collection network. The collection tools (cameras and sensors on unmanned aerial vehicle, portable video cameras and sensors on mast, vehicle mounted sensors, IMSI-Catcher to identify persons in danger, alerts by SMS) shall provide real or simulated data to the control center. These data will be fused for creating intelligent information to support decision making during the management of the Incident. The incident manager at the control center shall implement the necessary tasks with the help of the ESS-portal (evacuation, rescue of people, fire fighting, remedy of chemical contamination, traffic management).
The findings from the field trial will help the consortium to tailor the functional and user-related requirements to the target user group of the system to come.
External observers are welcomed to join the ESS field trial in Germany. The field trial will be held in English. Feedback from the observers will be valuable for the ESS consortium and a specific session following the demonstration is organized for this purpose.
Please contact Renate Henkeler (renate.henkeler[.]iais.fraunhofer.de) at the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS in Germany for more information if you are interested to the ESS field test.
Note: The ESS project is funded by the European Comission of the EU under the FP7 SECURITY Programme of DG Enterprise.
