Algeria is the second largest country in Africa (after Sudan). Its countryside and history are just as fascinating as those of the neighbouring countries Morocco and Tunisia (maghreb). With the Mediterranean Sea to the North, the mighty Atlas Mountains (with peaks of more than 2300 m in height) cutting through the middle and the Sahara desert in the South, these varying landscapes are simply breathtaking to see.
Its rich and multifaceted cultural history includes important rock paintings in the Sahara desert, numerous ruins from Roman times and magnificent mosques. The 1200 km long Mediterranean coast and the world's largest desert combine to provide the foundations for a successful tourism industry, and as a result, tourism is already starting to grow. Since 2003 the number of tourists increased from a little over one million to 1.6 million in the year 2006, with 6-700,000 of them being Europeans. Most Algerians spend their holidays in their own country and still represent the majority of tourists.
The growth has come quick and as a result, Algeria's infrastructure has not kept pace with the increase in tourism demands. It is widely known that the government’s goal is to make the tourist experience of Algeria better known around the globe. In order to stay competitive in the tourism industry, Algeria has begun development on many projects, additional foreign investments are on the rise and state-run hotels are being privatized, all to cater to more tourism.
Our customer, the APPL, is a public enterprise with industrial and commercial character, founded in 1998 by the municipality of Algiers. Their objectives are to market, protect and enhance the status of the 57 communities of the province of Algiers. These activities shall be expanded to the entire coastal area in the upcoming years. The first step of the pilot project "beach cleaning" resulted in the purchase of 4 BeachTech Marina’s and 10 BeachTech Sweepy hydro machines. These were placed for use in the communities of Zeralda, Staoueli, Herraoua and Borj El Kiffan as an addition to their normal manual cleaning efforts and more communities will be given BeachTech Sweepy hydro machines. In March – as soon as the weather conditions permit – the "real" beach cleaning will begin.
