Recognition of five GE LED systems in this year's DOE/IESNA/IALD Next Generation Luminaires™ Competition and two GE LED systems last year shows deep commitment to lighting technology innovation, understanding applications and delivering quality.
GE Lighting Solutions, a unit of GE Lighting, has earned more awards than any other company in this year's Next Generation Luminaires™ (NGL) Competition, including a Best-in-Class award for the GE EvolveTM R150 LED Cobrahead Luminaire, a new LED street and roadway light. An additional four GE LED lighting systems for refrigerated display, architectural and outdoor applications were recognized. The competition, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the International Association of Lighting Designers, cites excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED luminaries for general illumination lighting.
This is the second year for the NGL competition and the second time GE has been recognized with a Best-in-Class distinction. Seven commercially available GE LED lighting systems have been recognized since the inception of the competition. GE received a Best-in-Class distinction for the GE Immersion® LED Display Case Lighting System and a Special Recognition for the GE LED Cove Lighting System as a market-ready luminaire in last year's competition. GE also earned the top prize for "light sources and controls" at the Lighting Design Awards 2009 for its Vio® High-Power White LED technology.
"Our team welcomes every opportunity to put GE's LED system and fixture design expertise to the test," says David Elien, president & CEO of GE Lighting Solutions. "Since this recognition reaches across our LED lighting system portfolio, it's a win not only for prospective customers asking ‘why go with GE' but also for customers who entrust us with big retail, architectural and outdoor LED lighting initiatives. These awards are an acknowledgement of the value we bring to the table in terms of innovation, understanding customer applications, testing, quality and performance."
Best-in-Class
The new GE EvolveTM R150 LED Cobrahead Luminaire features an advanced LED optical system that provides improved horizontal and vertical uniformity, reduced glare and improved lighting control compared with traditional metal halide lighting systems. It provides a 15 to 30 percent reduction in system energy consumption and an estimated service life of more than 10 years (50,000-hour rated life), reducing maintenance frequency and need.
Recognized Winners
The high-efficiency GE ImmersionTM RV30 LED Refrigerated Display Lighting System increases energy savings because it runs on just 29 watts per door. Such low operating wattage reduces energy consumption from case lighting up to 84 percent compared with T10 VHO fluorescent systems-145 watts for the RV30 Series compared with 894 watts for T10 VHO in a typical five-door case. This wattage reduction eases the workload of the compressor that removes heat from inside the case, providing up to an additional 341 watts of indirect energy savings. It delivers 29 percent more energy savings and 28 percent more light versus GE's early-generation LED solutions. Its 50,000-hour rated life significantly reduces maintenance costs and hassles.
The GE Tetra® AL10 LED System replaces fluorescent and halogen lighting in a variety of retail and architectural applications, including under cabinet, under shelf, cove, accent and task lighting. Combining versatility with superb quality of light, this low-profile modular fixture produces brilliant white light that will meet the high standards of lighting designers, while reducing energy consumption by up to 40 percent compared with T5 fluorescent systems.
The GE EvolveTM LED Contemporary Domed Area Light has a long 50,000-hour rated life at 85 percent of initial lumens with an output of 4,900 lumens at 90 watts. Features such as a high color temperature (5600K or 4100K), a 70+ color-rendering index and a low-glare optical design enable low light trespass in residential roadways, walkways, historic urban settings, shopping centers, malls, plazas and parks.
The GE EvolveTM LED Series Area Light combines the latest in LED system electronics, thermal management, and mechanical and optical design, making the advantages of LED lighting a practical reality in parking lots and general lighting applications. It delivers 30 percent energy savings compared with traditional metal halide lighting while providing an estimated 10-year service life (50,000-hour rated life) that is four times the recommended service interval of a standard high-intensity discharge lighting system.
For this year's NGL competition, 126 products from 60 different companies were entered for evaluation. Among the 47 that were recognized for excellence, just four were cited as best-in-class offerings. Products were judged based on several key attributes, including color appearance, color rendering, appropriate luminance, application effectiveness and aesthetic appearance and style, among other criteria. Visit ngldc.org for a complete explanation of evaluation criteria.
