When it comes to “going green” in Monterey County, Hallmark Construction and National Geographic School Publishing know how to get the job done as the two entities near completion on NGSP’s exciting new headquarters in Monterey, California at the Ryan Ranch Business Park. The Central Coast’s leading architectural firm, Wald, Ruhnke & Dost Architects, LLP, provided architectural and design services, and the deal was brokered by NAI BT’s Monterey office.
Encompassing more than 20,000 square feet of prime office space, the world’s leading producer of award-winning scholastic publications selected Northern California’s foremost sustainable building general contractor, Hallmark Construction, for the completion of a stunning new headquarters that to date is the largest private, commercial green tenant improvement project in the region.
With a February, 2010 planned opening date, the two companies insisted on exceeding every leading environmental standard in the industry. Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to sustainability, this project easily surpassed Monterey’s governmental standards for “smart building” while setting new benchmarks for others to aspire to.
Wald, Ruhnke & Dost Architects created the Tenant Improvement design plan, and submitted selections of interior finishes and materials to Hallmark’s leading team of construction experts and NAI BT. Together the firms complied with and exceeded Monterey’s green building requirements. The result is an office environment that reflects National Geographic’s image and values as well as the highest quality of sustainable design elements. This trend-setting “Class A” tenant improvement project featured the use of recycled and reusable components. The project’s adhesives, paints and finished materials are environmentally friendly low-emitting “green seal” products. Further, both National Geographic School Publishing and Hallmark Construction deemed it a priority to reuse the existing building structure while implementing an indoor air quality management plan as outlined by the United States Green Building Council. Energy efficiency is maximized through fulfillment of the highest possible standards for HVAC and lighting controls.
National Geographic School Publishing, together with the Hampton-Brown Company, is a recognized leader with brands that include award-winning educational programs that deliver the high-interest content and exceptional quality that has been a National Geographic tradition for generations. From its environmentally friendly new headquarters in Monterey, the company will continue to provide noted, high quality pre-kindergarten – 12th grade instructional materials, resources for emergent and early literacy, materials for ESL and ELD and Reading/Language Arts, and Content Literacy development.
