The minute a dictation is finished, reports and referrals can start being transcribed. Secretaries can see at a glance which documents require priority attention, especially useful for statutory two-week referrals.
The team has been using digital dictation from G2 Speech since the Centre opened five years ago. The ambition of its founders was to create a modern surgery with traditional values, using progressive information technology (IT) to enhance the patient experience at every stage of surgery.

MediSpeech is the only digital dictation system the Village Medical Centre has ever used, explains Jon Ephgrave, IT Lead at the Centre. “The beauty of this solution is that we have never had to do anything to it – it doesn’t fall over, there’s no maintenance, and you don’t need to keep updating it…it’s as good today as it was on day one. And on the few occasions when we have needed to contact G2 Speech, the customer service has been excellent – the staff are above and beyond helpful.
“Our doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants and administrative staff were all keen to exploit new technology. Their only concern initially was that it would be more difficult to use than the traditional audio tapes. However, MediSpeech is quite intuitive. For most staff, 5-10 minutes of training is all it takes.”
One of the key advantages of this form of digital dictation, according to Ephgrave, is that the Centre has been able to maintain a complete electronic archive from day one. All its original files are regularly backed up and there is no need for a warehouse to accommodate five years-worth of paper records.
