James McGregor, author of the bestselling book One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China and former CEO of Dow Jones & Company in China, joins APCO Worldwide as a senior counselor based in Beijing, President and CEO Margery Kraus announced today. McGregor will also serve as a member of APCO’s International Advisory Council.
“Foreign enterprises can do more business in China now than ever before, but there are still many unique conditions and parameters,” said Kraus. “Jim’s deep and varied China experience is a strong match with our existing team of China experts and will add considerable value to our clients.”
McGregor has lived in China for more than 20 years and is widely considered one of the world’s leading China experts. He was a journalist in Washington, D.C., before becoming The Wall Street Journal’s Taiwan bureau chief in 1987. He later transferred to Beijing as chief of The Wall Street Journal’s China bureau, a job that took him to nearly every province in China during a period when very few foreigners had access to such an intimate view of the country’s social, economic and political culture.
In addition to his accomplishments as an author, journalist and professional speaker, McGregor has enjoyed a successful and diverse business career. During his time as CEO of Dow Jones & Company in China, he oversaw a team of 150 employees and managed ventures including business television, Chinese language newswires and an early investment in Sohu.com. McGregor later was China managing director for a venture capital fund, and he founded several consulting and research firms in China. He also served as chairman and governor of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.
“I am privileged to have the unique vantage point of being a journalist, a businessman and an active participant in public policy during my China career,” McGregor said. “I look forward to using what I have learned to guide APCO’s clients through the intricacies of doing business and achieving success in China.”
