The challenge of workforce attrition and subsequent risk of organizational knowledge loss at the workforce and leadership level is assuming a growing urgency because of the many ways that knowledge can be lost in an organization (e.g retirement, promotion, and career change). Challenges exist due to changing demographics and generational differences that encompass skills, cultural norms, and work expectations. Approaches to capturing and retaining critical knowledge for reuse and the timing of these activities across public and private sector organizations have been addressed in many ways with some more-or-less effective than others.
According to Bill Kaplan, Founder of Working Knowledge CSP, "These methods, unfortunately, only target a small fraction of the critical knowledge making up true institutional memory necessary for operations and growth. To be effective, knowledge capture, transfer and reuse must focus on establishing a culture (and supporting technology) geared to mentoring, collaboration, knowledge sharing, and collection of relevant and critical individual and organizational learning on a continual basis as part of normal business operations. When not part of how the business operates, it is always viewed as "extra" work and it won't happen."
Working Knowledge CSP evolved a unique solution called, "Knowledge at the Point of Execution," which focuses on mitigating the business and operational risk from the loss of critical organizational knowledge. This solution includes unique tools and practices for understanding workforce dynamics and the collaboration maturity of the organization and its ability to capture and reuse knowledge, and the development and deployment of a sustainable operating practices to ensure that the organization not only retains relevant and critical subject matter knowledge, but also transfers that knowledge to incoming professionals and practitioners at the leadership, front-line supervisor, and workforce levels. The solution brings together:
• A common, simple set of integrated core KM practices which are easily understood, supported, and performed on the job, resulting in an embedded, sustainable way of working.
• Identification and rapid leveraging of effective practices and lessons learned through the integration of people, processes, and technology supporting the capture and reuse of critical information, experience, and insight.
• Operating concepts, strategies, and practices to identify, capture, retain, and transfer relevant and critical knowledge from an aging or high-turnover leadership and workforce to the next generation of leadership and the remaining workforce.
• Improved and sustainable ability for leadership and workforce to connect with their peers, to collect knowledge from within and outside of their organization, and an ability to collaborate across their organization through communities of practice.
