The damper is torsionally very soft, installed between engine and gearbox and isolates vibrations from the driveline. Additionally, the new series also provides proven hydraulic damping that significantly reduces overloads. The American world leader in agricultural machinery John Deere has placed an order with Voith for several ten thousand of these dampers.
Until recently, the Voith Hydrodamp torsional vibration damper was aimed at tractors with over 100 HP. Below this class there is now an increasing trend towards higher-quality transmissions with load-shift functions. This, in combination with four to five cylinder high-torque engines, makes serious demands on the vibration damper. The new concept of the spring arrangement in the Hydrodamp 300 LS results in a noticeably softer characteristic curve, which significantly improves the isolation of vibrations in these critical drives. The hydraulic damping properties of the existing Hydrodamp HTSD 300 have been fully adopted. In the event of resonance, load shocks and peak torques, the driveline is now protected.
The order by John Deere for several ten thousand Hydrodampers HTSD 300 LS units is the result of the excellent business relationship between Voith and the agricultural machinery producer that has been spanning many years. This partnership also had an impact on the product development: within only four weeks after Voith Turbo designed the new vibration damper and provided prototypes for vehicle tests in the USA. Just one year later, the Hydrodamp entered series production. The concept is based on a modular principle: while the construction size and the number of components remain the same, the actual damping and spring characteristics are adapted to customer requirements.
The Hydrodamp now offers more comfort and longer life cycles also in compact tractors and allows better economy: it allows frequent driving in the more economical lower speed range and thus enables fuel savings and reduced emissions.
