Author-it Software Corporation, (ASC), a world leader in software for enterprise authoring, content management, publishing, and localization, today announces the availability of its latest release, Author-it 5.3. In this release ASC has extended its capability to deliver the most practical and cost effective approach to implementing structured authoring, including standards based content models such as DITA or S1000D.
"Structured Authoring" addresses the issue of inconsistency within an organization's content and documentation. Inconsistencies negatively affect an organization's brand, communication and regulatory compliance. The challenge that organizations have faced is the sheer scale and cost of moving to structured authoring. A typical implementation will involve significant migration effort and cost associated with the development of XML schemas and systems integration. Additionally, structured authoring principles and standards such as DITA have been limited to use in technical documentation where professional technical communicators have the skill and expertise to work with complex XML authoring and content management tools.
Author-it 5.3 breaks this paradigm by offering a practical approach to implementing structured authoring. Any number of structures can be created including standard content models such as DITA, while allowing authors to continue to deliver to existing deadlines. Content can be easily shared between departments even if they are using different structures or content models. Resulting publications can then be published to any of Author-it’s 11 out-of-the-box Print, Help, Web, and XML outputs including OASIS compliant DITA. In this, Author-it is routinely used for proposal management, training materials, policy and procedure manuals, corporate reports, as well as technical publications and online help systems. This ability to share content between different departments increases the value and ROI of an Author-it deployment when compared to competing solutions who only address the needs of Technical Publications.
"For years technical publications departments have reaped the rewards of structured authoring and content reuse using complex XML authoring and content management tools. Now, with the ease-of-use and practicality that Author-it brings, the rest of the organization can too." said Paul Trotter, CEO of ASC. "We are committed to supporting and incorporating emerging standards like DITA and S1000D but we want to do this in a way that makes content accessible throughout an organization. With Author-it 5.3, we are enabling our clients to use these standards and still reuse and repurpose that knowledge in other less technical areas like sales and HR."
Also in the Author-it 5.3 release, ASC delivers substantial performance gains, a new AJAX based Web Help template, extended dictionaries, and a theming engine for their web authoring platform, Author-it Live.
Author-it 5.3 runs on Windows Servers, Windows-based PCs and web browsers. ASC clients who have current Author-it maintenance plans will get an automatic upgrade to this latest release.
