The Frost & Sullivan "2009 European Gastroenterology Technology Implementation of the Year Award," is presented to Ireland-based Crospon for successfully using the impedance planimetry technique in its novel EndoFLIP® (endoluminal functional lumen imaging probe) imaging system.
"With EndoFLIP®, Crospon has addressed the urgent need for a clinically acceptable diagnostic platform targeting gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)," states Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Prasanna Vadhana Kannan. "This integrated solution facilitates real-time imaging of the lower oesophageal sphincter in less than ten minutes."
The system uses a simple technique - impedance planimetry - that transforms an impedance measurement into an area measurement. It, therefore, provides a more physiologically relevant diagnostic test for GERD.
The EndoFLIP® system also assists surgeons in the assessment of the degree of surgical tightening of the sphincter region during surgery. The evaluation of the gastroesophageal junction by EndoFLIP®, in tandem with direct endoscopic visualisation, heralds the emergence of a novel paradigm of diagnostic assessment known as functional endoscopy.
"Crospon's solution is easy to deploy and is also cost-effective," states Kannan. "Moreover, the components of the imaging tool enable precise measurement of the distensibility and functional diameter of the sphincter region, thereby serving as an indispensable tool for gastroenterologists."
Crospon has submitted an application to the FDA for EndoFLIP®'s clearance in the US market. It has already received CE mark certification from the National Standards Authority of Ireland.
The Company recently announced that it has agreed a worldwide distribution deal for EndoFLIP®. The agreement with Dutch company, Medical Measurement Systems, one of the world's leading companies in the development and distribution of medical gastrodiagnostic systems will result in first customer shipments into Europe during the summer.
The company is in the process of conducting more advanced trials on the system. It aims to demonstrate the important role that EndoFLIP® could play in determining the biomechanical properties of the gastroesophageal junction in GERD patients.
"Nearly 6-7 patents covering different applications of the EndoFLIP® platform have been filed," comments Kannan. "Crospon is engaged in an active partnership with Northwestern University for conducting clinical studies related to EndoFLIP®'s applicability."
Frost & Sullivan's Technology Implementation Award is bestowed upon a company, which makes effective and an innovative use of an existing technology, which has resulted in innovation(s) that have brought or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. This award recognises the quality and depth of a company's research and development program as well as the vision and risk-taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavor.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development.
