Aricent™, a global innovation, technology and services company focused exclusively on communications, and Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, wireless, storage, security and video applications today announced a joint collaboration through which the companies expect to offer pre-optimized, performance enhanced Aricent LTE eNodeB Layer 2 and Layer 3 stacks, and the Aricent LTE eNodeB Framework (eNBF), for Cavium's OCTEON™ Multi-core MIPS64® Processor Family for Long Term Evolution (LTE) base station applications. This alliance is anticipated to create significant technology synergies, offering eNodeB equipment manufacturers a high-performance solution for their LTE platforms, while simultaneously reducing time to market, risk and cost
Aricent LTE eNodeB software – comprising of the PHY, MAC, RLC, PDCP, RRC, S1AP, X2AP, GTPu and SCTP stacks, are key components for building LTE Femtocells, Pico and Macro eNodeB basestations. The Aricent LTE eNodeB Framework (eNBF) integrates Layer 2 and 3 functionality into a seamless package, accelerating and simplifying development of a carrier class eNodeB solution. This pre-optimized solution is expected to be available on the current Cavium OCTEON Plus Processor Family and the upcoming OCTEON II CN63XX processor. In conjunction with this announcement, Aricent has also joined the Cavium PACE (Partnership to Accelerate Customer End-solutions) ecosystem, an extensive network of world class partners.
“Aricent has a rich history providing mobile communications technology to the world’s leading infrastructure manufacturers,” said YJ Kim, Senior Director, Networking and Communications Division at Cavium Networks. “Combining Aricent’s LTE expertise and software technology with OCTEON Multi-core MIPS64 processors will provide our mutual customers with a robust and reliable optimized solution for base station applications. With Aricent offering end-to-end products and outsourcing services in LTE, we plan to extend this partnership to support the complete range of LTE network elements, including Evolved Packet Core (EPC) entities like Mobility Management Entity (MME), Serving Gateway (SGW) and Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateway.”
The OCTEON processor family is the industry’s broadest Multi-core MIPS64 based processor family with over 30 different integrated processors with application performance ranging from 1Gbps to 40+Gbps. The OCTEON processor family consists of processors with 1 to 16 cores on a single chip with integrated multiple GEs, 10GEs, sRIO, PCI-X or PCI-express networking interfaces with industry leading hardware acceleration for packet processing, quality of service, TCP, Security, compression / decompression and pattern matching.
“Aricent is investing aggressively to create a full reference software solution for LTE base stations. This collaboration reflects our continued emphasis on growing our ecosystem of technology leaders in the LTE space” explained Rakesh Vij, Assistant Vice President at Aricent. “Cavium’s semiconductor expertise combined with Aricent’s software solution simplifies development complexity for LTE infrastructure customers. We’re seeing a lot of traction in 3.5G and LTE space for OCTEON CN5XXX processors, and we expect the OCTEON II CN63XX to provide a very compelling SOC solution for LTE eNodeB platforms.”
