Almaty, Kazakhstan, 2009/04/27 - Transshipment volumes and initiatives to improve supply chain relay services between the Baltic region and northern Europe will be a key point of discussion during the 4th Annual Breakbulk Europe Conference and Exhibition from 26-28 May, in Antwerp.

As part of the conference theme of “Working Toward Recovery” a special regional panel will canvass what cargo opportunities and transportation challenges exist at Baltic ports.
The session will be moderated by Mr Siddique Khan, President and CEO, of multi-modal solutions provider Globalink Logisitcs Group with an office network within and servicing Central Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Mr Khan said increasing globalization offered opportunities to integrate intermodal services that connected with strategic transshipment hub locations.
“The Baltic trade routes are historically important and continue to be a vital link to offer reliable access to markets in northern Europe and Russia,” Mr Khan said.
“The panel has the opportunity to discuss transport infrastructure capabilities and how this meets the demand for services. Certainly the Baltic and northern European economies are not immune to the global economic downturn and has experienced some contraction, but I am sure the Break Bulk panel session will prove to be very optimistic in regard to future developments.”
Mr Khan said the Baltic States gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and it had only been five years since they had joined the European Union.
He said major projects that represented opportunities included providing supply chain management services to the Russian city of Sochi in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, and supporting the modernisation of transport and utilities infrastructure particularly growing demand for renewable energy such as wind power.
Additionally, the continuing exploration of the Arctic’s mineral wealth, particularly by Russia who has estimated the area has billions of tonnes of oil and gas, are becoming increasingly accessible as the ice cap melts.
The Regional Panel chaired by Mr Khan includes Jan Otto, Senior Project Manager, Transgroup Worldwide Logistics based in the United States, Mogens Ellerbaek, Vice President Sea, Air & Projects, DSV, Bjarne Mathiesen, Director, Port of Aarhus and Henrik Alsing, Logistics Manager, FL Smidth A/S Cement.
