Global Immersion has won the 2009 EMEA+ InAVation Award for ‘Most InAVative Leisure Project’ in recognition of its recent work at Cosmonova - the combined planetarium and IMAX dome theater at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. The two-phase project included the integration of both large-format 3D (active stereo) and digital fulldome displays within the 23-meter theater, both of which have been commended for their complexity, innovation and application of leading-edge technologies.
A panel of experts from a range of industry backgrounds judged over one-hundred project entries based upon system design, system integration and innovative development of technologies. Global Immersion’s Chief Executive, Martin Howe, accepted the award on behalf of the Company at a special ceremony in Amsterdam on Monday 2nd February 2009.
Speaking about the award and the Cosmonova projects, Howe said “I’m delighted that we can announce this as our first award – the projects were anything but simple and brought about a number of design engineering challenges. It’s fantastic that the extraordinary effort, teamwork and determination of everyone involved, particularly the client team, has been recognised with such a prestigious award.”
Global Immersion (globalimmersion.com) supplied a six-channel projectiondesign F30 sx+ solution (Fidelity Bright) to fill the existing 23-meter (760m2) dome, accompanied by a full production, automation, management and mass-storage system. The second digital display included the integration of a dual-projector Christie CP2000-ZX active stereo solution (Fidelity 3D) over a 17m ‘window’, connected to a high-powered management and control system. This combination of an active stereo, large-format digital display and a multi-channel fulldome solution in one theater has now become the first of its kind anywhere in the world.
The labor-intensive projects followed extensive planning and technology mapping, and demanded a tight-knit collaboration between Global Immersion, Cosmonova and technology suppliers to create exceptional digital fulldome and 3D displays.
Both state-of-the-art systems incorporated a number of innovative features to facilitate robust operation and maintenance of the theater. Howe explained, “We developed a number of technologies to truly customize this project. Among many things, our Engineers developed an AMX remote diagnostic and preventative fault reporting system specifically for the team at Cosmonova – the guys then engineered an SMPTE timecode system to sync up all the solutions; creating a visually and operationally consistent theater.” He continued “This has been a unique project both for us and the professional AV industry, we now look forward to raising the benchmark further with future installations.”
The EMEA+ InAVation Awards are organised by IML Group PLC - recognizing and rewarding the achievements of the pro AV integration sector. The InAVation Awards celebrate all that is best in the pro AV systems industry throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa.
