Fortal is a leading designer of products for use in access and personal safety for the rail industry. “One of our advantages, as compared to the competition, is that we offer a comprehensive service, whereby we manage each step from design to manufacture, through to on-site installation,” explains Nicolas Ruffenach, Chairman and Managing Director of Fortal.
Fortal specialises in tailor-made construction services for the rail sector – currently the major focus for the company’s business development. The company equips the maintenance workshops of the leading players in public transport, including Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens and SNCF. It also supplies rail construction and maintenance companies with workstations that are adapted to specific tasks, such as replacing windscreens.
Fortal manufactures systems that provide access to doors or rooftop air-conditioning units, as well as equipment for platforms and track-crossing. “An obvious advantage we have over competitors, who assemble their systems from preset screwed elements, is that we use a mechanical welding process, providing operators with a product that is operational on delivery and which needs very little setting-up. In addition, we offer a guarantee that it will last, for there is no risk of the mechanically welded elements separating,” says Nicolas Ruffenach.
Fortal’s production system brings together the skills of its 10 design staff, as well as its installation teams, who are trained to work on sensitive sites, such as in the chemicals and defence sectors. The company also has its own aluminium-welding robots.
Fortal is committed to quality. Its manufacturing processes meet stringent criteria and, in order to ensure traceability, all its marketed products are easily identifiable. Moreover, one of Fortal’s departments is wholly dedicated to ongoing monitoring of the regulatory situation. In order to meet particular access and assembly specifications, all scaffolding supplied by the company is tested well beyond the requirements of current international standards. In the same way, all welders working on the company’s production sites are authorised under European Union standard EN 287-2.
