Identica received this award for the development of its infrared VP–II Hand Vascular Pattern solutions, an innovative suite of products providing highly accurate, reliable, non-intrusive and foolproof hand vascular biometric solutions for identity verification.

The company's flagship biometric identification system, VP–II Vascular Pattern Scanner, raises the bar in biometrics technology by using a near-passive infrared imaging technique to capture the unique vascular patterns of an individual below the surface of the skin on the back of the hand. The infrared camera achieves nearly 400 micrometers of subcutaneous penetration, providing a precise vascular image.
"The vascular images obtained are encrypted and stored on a 280-byte template, allowing for a one-to-one comparison for authentication purposes," explains Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Girish Solanki. "The VP-II scanner uses patented recognition algorithms based on unique veins, arteries, and capillaries to capture and encrypt an individuals' vascular pattern."
The captured images are orthographically projected, encrypted, and stored in the form of templates on smart cards, network servers, or 2D bar codes. The scanner communicates with Identica's proprietary Universal Controller (the UC-2 for smart card) or T-Controller for network applications in order to authenticate the user against the stored template. The identification takes about 0.1 second per person and the probability of any two templates being identical is negligible.
The VP-II scanner can find significant application in securing access to restricted areas, as it uses a two-factor authentication technique. The first factor relates to the user presenting something they have or know, such as a valid smart or proximity credential or pin. The second factor is their live vascular image. The vascular biometric recognition technology is a good fit for industry workforce applications, as it enables supervisors to keep track of attendance and determine overtime payment control.
"Identica also has a back-end IP-based solution, IONcontrol, that facilitates the management of user enrollment and access," observes Solanki. "This type of device can be seamlessly integrated into current, legacy, and future TCP/IP based entry management, time and attendance, and credential verification systems."
While conventional biometric recognition techniques require the area being scanned to be free of any kind of bruise or contamination by lotions, oils, grease, or dirt, the VP-II scanner's infrared imaging technique provides a hygienic, quick, easy, and non-intrusive means of authentication. The system does not require physical contact with the sensor, and supports unlimited user templates in network/smart card configurations.
"Another feature of the VP–II scanner is that it can operate under extreme and harsh weather conditions, and this is made possible by providing the scanners with a "WeatherShield", a heated outdoor enclosure," notes Solanki. "The VP–II units are also equipped with freestanding pedestals for easy set up in the event that secure wall mounting is not possible."
