Technical fabrics maker, Glen Raven, announced that its GlenGuard FR fabrics have been certified as safe for humans by Oeko-Tex, the global association that tests fabrics for more than 100 harmful substances. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification was granted to GlenGuard FR after extensive evaluation of its fabrics.
“We are in the business of protecting people,” says Hal Bates, director of marketing for Glen Raven Technical Fabrics. “So it just makes sense for us to ensure that our GlenGuard FR fabrics are free of hazardous chemicals that could harm the people who wear them.”
Glen Raven selected Oeko-Tex because of the organization’s global reputation and the broad scope of its certification. Oeko-Tex certified fabrics are screened for carcinogenic dyestuffs, formaldehyde, heavy metals, pentachlorophenol, and other substances which are known to be harmful to human health.
“Flame resistant fabrics can pose textile safety concerns because many are processed with harmful chemicals,” says Dr. Manfred Wentz, U. S. director of Oeko-Tex. That’s not an issue with GlenGuard FR fabrics. Kermel® aramid and modacrylic fibers, also Oeko-Tex certified, provide GlenGuard FR’s flame resistant properties so that chemical additives are not required. “With the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, Glen Raven can guarantee to their customers that GlenGuard FR fabrics not only protect from flame and heat hazards but are safe to wear,” continued Wentz.
GlenGuard FR is being marketed to protective apparel makers serving the electric and petrochemical industries, oil and gas companies, industrial maintenance, engineering firms, automotive racing, and other sectors where people are exposed to heat, flames, chemicals, and electric arc hazards. GlenGuard FR fabrics exceed the strictest industrial safety standards (NFPA 2112) for thermal and body burn protection, meet SFI Foundations specification 3.2A, and offer lightweight HRC2 protection.
