17th Annual Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Customer Awards Ceremony held in the Trident Technical College Complex for Economic Development.
Terry Kinder, Chair of the Trident Workforce Investment Board, thanked everyone for “joining us in expressing our appreciation to the award recipients and in celebrating their accomplishments and contributions to workforce development in the Trident Region.”
“Each month more than 9,000 customers visit and return to the Trident One Stop Career System for career preparation, training, and placement services,” reported Kinder.
"Our region is evolving... Staying competitive is a challenge. The best way to ensure our region’s workforce remains competitive in the worldwide economy is to ensure that our workers have the necessary skills.”
“The Trident Workforce Investment Board has a critical role to play in meeting this challenge and is best equipped to lead the region’s workforce development effort. It has the links to education, business, and economic development leaders that influence the region’s growth and development. With our workforce partners, we develop the regional talent needed to respond to workforce development challenges.”
After a few brief words from Joe MeKeown, Charleston County Council; Daniel Davis, Berkeley County Supervisor; and Larry Hargett, Chair Dorchester County Council, Kinder, with the assistance of Paul L. Connerty, TWIB Executive Director, Jim Jones, TWIB Vice Chair, and Jan Cappellini, 2nd Vice Chair, proudly presented the awards.
Salisbury Electrical Safety, American LaFrance, and Protected Vehicles, Inc. were honored as “Outstanding Business Customers of the Year”.
“Outstanding Customers of the Year” awards were presented to Martha Carson, Rondell Carter, Michael McCabe, Cassandra Simmons, Lindsay Moore, Clarence Matthews, and Andrew Holmgren.
After the presentation of awards, Connerty added his congratulations and appreciation to the award winners by saying, “We value each of you as a customer of the Trident One Stop Career System, and want to continue to help you achieve success.”
He commented that “this year’s program was dynamic and next year promises to offer even greater opportunities” as the TWIB has approved funding and support for:
• Expanding the WorkKeys® profiling program;
• Increasing funding to support in-demand training;
• Expanding outreach efforts to raise awareness of TOSCS workforce development services;
• Extending one stop center services into rural areas; and
• Conducting region wide assessments for present and future workforce development needs.”
He then thanked the TWIB for its “vision and leadership to create a competitive workforce advantage for our region”, and the staff of the one stop system, adult and youth program staff, Palmetto Youth Connections, one stop partners, and the Charleston County Grants Department for their “hard work, professionalism, and commitment to the team.”
A raffle to benefit the C. DeVineau White Scholarship Fund ended the day’s events.
The goal of the One-Stop Career System is to improve the quality of the workforce and enhance workforce productivity to aid in the growth of the region’s economy.
