Charleston, SC, United States, 2007/07/16 - The Trident Workforce Development Board (TWIB) and Charleston County kick off the 2007 Change A Life, Hire A Kid (CALHAK) summer youth employment program.

The Trident Workforce Investment Board (TWIB) in partnership with Charleston County kicked off its 2007 Change A Life, Hire A Kid (CALHAK) summer youth employment program with an orientation on June 2nd at the Trident One Stop Career Center, located at 1930 Hanahan Road in North Charleston. The orientation taught the participating youth about workplace safety, how to dress for success, and prepare for job interviews.
“This program not only gives youth the opportunity to learn about the world of work, local businesses benefit from the additional help during the summer months,” said Jan Cappellini, partner at Alternative Staffing and TWIB 2nd Vice Chair. “The young lady who came to us last year through the CALHAK program was such a great addition to our staff that we hired her again this summer with plans to continue her employment with us while she continues her college education.”
Courtney P. Burgess agreed it was a career boost for her, too. Burgess, who previously worked as a cashier in “a much different environment”, is “using the opportunity to gain some experience in the business world and [to] learn how to act professionally.” A recent graduate of the School of the Arts, Burgess will attend Columbia College in the fall of 2007 to study dance and architecture.
The Change A Life, Hire A Kid (CALHAK) Campaign is a six-week summer program that gives youth, between the ages of 16 –21, the opportunity to gain real-world work experience. This year, youth are working in Charleston County Government offices, the library system as well as in various private sector area businesses. There were 57 placements; the average earnings are $7.00/hr and workers are eligible to work 20 hours per week for six weeks.
Campaign Coordinator Adrienne Sellers conducted interviews and pre-screening for all applicants in order to match their interests with available jobs. Once matched with an appropriate job, applicants were then sent to the job site for another interview with their future employer.
The Charleston County Council provided funding to hire CALHAK youth for employment in Charleston County positions and also for a temporary coordinator.
The goal of the One-Stop Career System is to improve the quality of the workforce and enhance workforce productivity to aid in the growth of the region’s economy. The Trident One-Stop Career Center is located at 1930 Hanahan Road in North Charleston. Satellite Centers are located in Moncks Corner, Summerville and Charleston.
