Sponsored by Microsoft, London Metropolitan University and others, the Gala event was staged by EUWIIN ( European Women Inventors and Innovators Network)
Pictured at the event's Gala Award evening are Celia Gates (England), Elaine Stephen (Scotland) and Liz Williams (Wales). The trio celebrated long into the night following their storming success at the Award Ceremony.
Celia Gates, already the winner of the British Consumer Invention of the Year 2004 Award scooped the top Design Award with DOCTOR COOK (doctorcookware.com), her ergonomically designed saucepan and handle system, which allows a positive and stronger grip than traditional straight handle designs. The acclaimed handle design makes lifting saucepans far more easy and with greater safety, giving younger and older cooks the ability to cook with confidence.
Elaine Stephen (Scotland) a schoolteacher from Aberdeenshire, Elaine took the top award in the Mother and Child category for her innovative 'Walkodile', designed primarily for controlling walkabout educational trips and suitable for any group of 3-7 year olds. A jointed central 'shaft' with hand grips and harness attachments puts the children in 'crocodile' formation behind the teacher. Children love it and Teachers or group leaders stay in control and in the lead!
Liz Williams (Wales) scored with her Linkz DNA Personal and Business
Security Alarms. Her invention is an identifiable powder spray visible only under infra-red light with its own DNA 'signature'. Liz has also notched up further successes with her idea, winning Female Inventor of the Year at the WIPO Awards, plus a gold medal for Best Invention in Safety and Security.
The overall winner of the EUWIIN event was Aino Heikkinen from Finland with a product called TEXTEM (Strengthening concrete using microfibres). TEXTEM allows fast build, extra strong building for disaster zones etc.
Award winner Celia Gates commented: 'It was a great feeling to share this success with two fellow Brits. We might be in the EU, but it's brilliant to take three awards back to the UK! I think this shows the world how strong womens ideas and inventions are and hopefully breaks the mould of inventors emerging from garden sheds. We tackle 'real world' needs and we have succeeded in producing practical highly practical solutions.’
