• The first X’trapolis 2.0 train has entered passenger service in Melbourne, Australia.
• The train has been developed in partnership with the Victorian Government and is built locally by Alstom at its Dandenong and Ballarat manufacturing sites, with the project supporting 750 jobs in the State of Victoria.
• The X’trapolis 2.0 train is planned to be rolled out over the coming years, replacing the longest serving trains operating on the Melbourne rail network and improving reliability and accessibility.

Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has delivered the first X'trapolis 2.0 train into passenger service in Melbourne, Australia. The train is the first of an initial €300m order for 25 trains placed by the Victorian Government, locally manufactured by Alstom at its Dandenong and Ballarat manufacturing sites.

The Victorian Government has also announced a budget allocation for a further 25 trains1, which would bring the total fleet to 50.

Tailored from Alstom’s proven Adessia commuter rail platform, the energy-efficient six-car electric train can carry up to 1,225 passengers and features a continuous walkthrough design, wider doors for faster boarding, and significant improvements in accessibility.

Specifically, the new trains further strengthen accessible travel with 20 dedicated wheelchair spaces, pram, bike and mixed-use areas, semi-automated ramps, tactile signage, assistive hearing technologies, and an improved passenger-driver interface. In total, 58 design refinements were made during initial design development in response to stakeholder, passenger and driver inputs, to ensure that the train is optimised for Melbourne.

The X'trapolis 2.0 project is notable for its minimum 60% local content requirement that has significantly contributed to the sustainability of the broader Victorian rail supply chain, securing hundreds of skilled manufacturing roles across metropolitan and regional Victoria and up to 750 jobs in the local rail supply chain.

Commenting on the delivery of the first train, Guillaume Tritter, Managing Director for Alstom Australia and New Zealand said,“The entry of the first X'trapolis 2.0 train into passenger service is a proud moment for all involved. I would like to sincerely thank the Alstom team, together with our partners at the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning and Metro Trains Melbourne, for the outstanding collaboration that made this achievement possible. The strength of these relationships has delivered something truly significant a train built in Victoria, for the people of Melbourne.”

Additional X'trapolis 2.0 trains will progressively enter passenger service as the fleet rollout continues.
Alstom is the only end-to-end manufacturer of trains and trams in Australia.

The entry of the X'trapolis 2.0 train adds to the significant rolling stock fleets delivered over decades by Alstom in Victoria including 141 Flexity and Citadis trams, 106 X'trapolis suburban trains and over 140 VLocity regional trains. Alstom is also building 100 next generation G Class trams for Melbourne based on a customised version of the proven Flexity 2 platform in Dandenong, which are due to enter passenger service later in 2026.
