Conducted by Synovate for IT Services provider and Unisys, this survey has been developed as regular measure of levels of concern held by Singaporeans towards a range of security issues across four areas of National, Financial, Internet and Personal Security.
The result parallels findings in the latest Unisys Security Index for Singapore which show very high levels of concern about the threat of Identity Theft.
The May 2007 Index showed 87 % of people were either extremely or very concerned about unauthorised access to or the misuse of their personal information.
The national poll found that 70 % of Singaporeans would support the use of a fingerprint scan to protect themselves from threats such as identity fraud and misuse of personal information.
“The survey demonstrates that Singaporeans overwhelmingly support the introduction of more advanced security measures to enhance the security of their identity. These results have important implications for a range of sectors including banking, finance, government and transport, which interact with consumers proving their identity every day,” said Scott Whyman, VP and GM of Unisys Asia South.
“This is consistent with trends emerging across our client base. Business, governments and consumers are today approaching the issue of security with a much more comprehensive understanding of the range of issues involved and they appreciate the need for a variety of responses”, he said.
The Synovate survey of 908 adults aged 18 to 64 years found that:
• Approximately 1.7 million Singaporeans or 70 per cent were happy to provide a fingerprint scan
• 1 million Singaporeans or 43 per cent would be willing to use a personal PIN
• 890 thousand Singaporeans or 37 % would be happy using a personal Password
• 610 thousand Singaporeans or 25 % said they would use a photograph
• 370 thousand Singaporeans or 15 % would be willing to provide a voice recording
• 960 thousand Singaporeans or 40 % would be happy to provide an eye scan
The significant support shown for the use of sophisticated security measures is reflected by the grave concerns Singaporeans hold about identity theft.
The latest Unisys Security Index has also found that 83 per cent of Singaporeans are extremely or very concerned about other people obtaining or using their Credit and or Debit Card details.
Unisys on Security
Organisations and governments today confront potential security threats that didn’t exist a decade ago, or, if they did, were not thought of as credible. The issues and potential solutions are complex. The Unisys approach to security is differentiated from that of our competitors in that we take a broader set of political, economic and consumer forces into account. Our approach to security is beyond ‘bits and bytes’ to reflect a multidimensional security ‘ecosystem’, with many inter-related interests, and in which the most effective solutions are going to be those formed through collaboration between stakeholders - business, government and consumers.
