2007 Prospects Looking Bleak: In the wake of the TJX privacy breach - the largest ever reported at 46 million credit card and debit card numbers - North American shoppers are concerned about the willingness, ability and interest of large organizations to protect their customers' personal information.
The recent discovery of hundreds of Rogers phone records littering the streets of Toronto, linking individuals, their contact information and financial details; has finally applied, with some urgency, the last nail in the coffin containing the trust, complacency and apathy of the Canadian public towards all privacy related matters.
The RCMP processed some 7800 cases of identity theft last year amounting to $16.3 million in individual losses. These do not include corporate identity theft and only hint at the fact that 2007 numbers will be staggering. The public demands answers and corporations need to hear the questions, find the answers before ever hoping to credibly produce a solution.
Canada's information security and privacy experts from Informatica Security in Toronto have compiled a concise document containing 30 best practices for individuals (and companies) to follow to combat identity theft, protect personal information loss and prevent privacy breaches.
Informatica's president is Claudiu Popa, a certified industry expert with two decades of experience. Mr. Popa remarked: "in addition to compiling this comprehensive and very simple guidance, we have also published a comprehensive page with nothing but links for reporting cybercrime, fraud, theft and malfeasance of all kinds.
