A solar plant larger than the size of 400 football fields is one of the projects counting on Tractebel services in Mexico. AKIN is located near Puerto Libertad, in the state of Sonora, northwestern Mexico and will have a capacity of 130 MWp. Tractebel is developing design review, owner engineering services and HSE Mission (Health, Safety and Environment) for said project.
One of the innovative aspects of this project is the use of robots that clean solar photovoltaic panels without water. Also, the project is located in a desert area. The equipment, T4, can clean modules in nighttime operation. Using microfiber and controlled air flow, T4 moves the dust particles out the panels. This is the first project to use this type of technology in Mexico.
The country has made a commitment during UN’s Conference of the Parties (COP-21) to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 22% until 2030, which goes hand in hand with the creation of a new energy matrix, where renewables have larger participation. In recent years, Mexico has seen a considerable growth in the number of projects taking advantage of the country's potential for generating wind energy or solar photovoltaic energy.
According to studies carried out by UNAM’s Laboratorio Nacional de Sistemas de Concentración Química Solar, solar radiation in Sonora is one of the highest in Mexico. In this way, it means that the project contributes to the economic development of a state with great potential for generation of this type of energy, which can attract other similar projects and increase the formation of specialized personnel with experience in projects of latest technology like this one.
According to François-Xavier Van Innis, regional manager at Tractebel Mexico, studies carried out by UNAM’s Laboratorio Nacional de Sistemas de Concentración Química Solar suggest that solar radiation in Sonora is one of the highest in Mexico. “This means that the project developed by Tractebel, besides increasing the company's presence in the country, contributes to the economic development of a state with great potential for generation of this type of energy, as well as attracting other similar projects and increase training of specialized professionals with experience in projects of latest technology like this one", he explains.
Work started at the end of 2018 and its conclusion and the start of operations at the power plant are expected for the end of 2019.
VILLA AHUMADA
Tractebel also works in another solar power plant project, Villa Ahumada, located in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. It will be installed in an area of 426 hectares, with a capacity of 199.8 MWp. This is another project of great importance for Tractebel, since it broadens the company's presence in Mexican territory and strengthens relationship with customers.
