This project consisted of the construction of a new 4-story structure, and will be followed by the phased interior renovation of the existing building. The new wing will now provide increased space and equipment giving physicians the ability to perform more complex, minimally invasive procedures.
“PCL is very excited and proud to work with the Ottawa Heart Institute, Infrastructure Ontario, and The Ottawa Hospital on this amazing project and recognize how valuable it is to our nation’s capital,” said Kevin Skinner, vice president and district manager for PCL’s Ottawa operations. “With our quickly aging population, the need for more cardiac care in our community has increased. Providing care for these increased numbers would not have been possible with the previous structure. We are encouraged in knowing that the construction of this new building, with its expanded capacity, will help reduce wait times for our families.”
Mr. Skinner is also very proud of the extensive work that has gone into building this great facility, stating,“I am aware of how hard our PCL team and construction partners have worked to bring this project to fruition safely and on time, and thank you all for your hard work!”
The new construction was complicated by its location on the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, surrounded by existing structures (the existing Heart Institute clinical building and a critical care wing in The Ottawa Hospital) which remained operational throughout construction. Adding to the already complicated project, was the addition of a new shelled-in floor which gives the Heart Institute room for future expansion.
