Splunk, Inc., first in delivering “aha” moments from machine data, today announced Heartland Jiffy Lube, operator of more than 550 Jiffy Lube locations across the U.S., is using Splunk® Enterprise Security (ES) and Splunk User Behavior Analytics (UBA) to find known, unknown and hidden security threats with machine learning. With Splunk ES and Splunk UBA, Heartland Jiffy Lube has improved mean-time-to-resolution (MTTR) of security incidents by over 60 percent while paying less than half of what it paid for legacy security information and event management (SIEM) solutions.
As the largest franchisee of quick lube retail service stores in the U.S., Heartland Jiffy Lube (jiffylube.com) serves approximately 5 million customers each year. To better protect its data, ensure customer satisfaction and eliminate cyber risk, Heartland Jiffy Lube deployed Splunk ES and Splunk UBA at the heart of its security operations center (SOC). By using data science that produces actionable results with risk ratings and supporting evidence, Splunk UBA gives analysts and threat hunters in Heartland’s SOC the ability to reduce risk of insider threat and eliminate manual processes that often augment security risks. Splunk UBA also helps analysts quickly initiate investigations to respond to internal and external threats.
“Data is Heartland Jiffy Lube’s most critical asset to drive business and protect ourselves from advanced cyber adversaries. Since deploying Splunk ES and Splunk UBA earlier this year, we can now triage security events and begin investigations in the SOC in minutes,” said Chidi Alams, head of IT and Information Security, Heartland Jiffy Lube. “With Splunk, we now have one solution for mitigating cyber attacks and insider threats, while receiving operational insights that benefit our entire organization. We look forward to our continued expansion of Splunk solutions as we explore how the power of machine learning can be applied to additional business use cases.”
In addition to using Splunk ES and Splunk UBA, Heartland Jiffy Lube is planning to expand its use of Splunk solutions and machine learning beyond IT security to other areas of the business. The company plans to use Splunk software for DevOps, an Internet of Things (IoT) battery testing application and business analytics beginning in the marketing department. Security operations is now viewed as a center of innovation within Heartland Jiffy Lube, with Alams advising the company’s board and other business units about how Splunk can have deeper and broader impact.
“Organizations in every sector are being tasked with modernizing security while simultaneously reducing the cost of security operations. While these goals can often seem counterintuitive, automation is helping security analysts do more with less,” said Haiyan Song, senior vice president of Security Markets, Splunk. “Heartland Jiffy Lube is a prime example of how Splunk ES and Splunk UBA can help bolster and automate security across the entire network in real time while lowering costs. We are excited to partner with them as they enter the next phase of their data journey as a business enabler.”
Splunk recently announced new versions of Splunk UBA 4.0, Splunk Insights for Ransomware, Splunk ES Content Update and Splunk Security Essentials for Fraud Detection to help customers advance security operations. To learn more about Splunk security solutions, visit the Splunk website.
