SASIE Awards recognize and honor outstanding entrepreneurs in the Southern Arizona region whose innovative, enterprising approach to business deserves special recognition. Buffalo Exchange was honored for demonstrating its strengths in terms of a clear marketing plan, promoting itself readily to its target markets, and for its selling process, pricing its products and/or services accordingly.
Buffalo Exchange was one of 12 companies chosen from 102 nominees this year. There were three categories (1-10 employees, 11-25 employees and 26-100 employees) with four awards (Culture and People, Sales and Marketing, Customer Service and Use of Technology) offered in each. The SASIE Awards aim to raise the profile of companies that create a better business environment and build a stronger economy in Southern Arizona. These companies are inspiring examples of what can be achieved while rising to the exciting challenges of running a business in this region. According to Charlie O'Dowd, Senior Vice President of the Southern Arizona Region of the Arizona Small Business Association, the SASIE Awards are intended to "celebrate our region's outstanding companies... The standard has been raised in business to inspire employees and customers to work smarter, not harder, and to operate an enterprise that serves the community." O'Dowd says that "each of the 102 companies nominated this year has set itself apart from the competition; the finalists have all demonstrated their tenacity and self-belief and the winners represent the best of our unique community of dedicated business enterprise" (Tucson Business Edge, March 2007).
Buffalo Exchange is unique because clothing and accessories are bought, sold and traded directly with store customers. Used clothes can be traded for any item in the store, including jewelry and new clothing. The ever-changing inventory includes designer wear, basics, vintage, jeans, leather, and one-of-a-kind items. As of March 2007, the resale clothing store chain has 29 stores and 3 franchises in 12 states, with over $43 million a year in sales.
