Gartner states that “by providing a better understanding of the risks to business objectives, operational risk management (ORM) enables better business performance and capital allocation.” The report explains that software also helps “companies address the increasing pressure from regulators to improve the risk reporting in annual reports, and to improve the board of directors' role in enterprisewide ORM oversight.”
According to the report, the “critical capabilities of ORM software applications center on providing business leaders with a more effective means of assessing risk and control effectiveness, identifying operational risk events, managing remediation efforts, and quantifying the associated operational risk exposure across the enterprise.”
Quantitative analysis as part of operational risk measurement was highlighted by Gartner as important in supporting capital calculation requirements driven by regulatory mandates, such as Basel III and Solvency II. These methods are also “used to develop more precise predictive models to determine the potential for certain operational risk events, such as fraud or theft.”
