MadgeTech recently had the chance to catch up with Doug Majestic, VP of Sales and Marketing, and Alec Webb, VP of Engineering, at Promedica, Incorporated to discuss their recent implementation of data loggers into their steam sterilization system. Located in Oldsmar, Florida, Promedica, Incorporated engineers, manufactures, and distributes various medical devices, as well as being an outsource partner in the development and production of new products.
As with any medical application, it is of the utmost importance to ensure that devices and equipment have been properly sterilized. Promedica uses an autoclave for their steam sterilization and recently decided that they wanted to use data loggers to assure that the machine was working as it is supposed to.
The steam sterilization process is broken down into three steps; conditioning, sterilization, and dry phase. During the sterilization period, the temperature in the compartment must reach 270 °F for 4 minutes to ensure proper sanitation. The drying phase consists of pressure being used to draw as much moisture out of the product as possible. This once again requires precise monitoring of internal pressure to ensure that the product will be safe for use.
Although the autoclave records and prints a summary of each load, it is possible for it to be incorrect, which could cause the entire load to be tainted, and potentially have life-threatening impacts. By using the MadgeTech PR140, Promedica (promedica-usa.com) is able to validate the results from the autoclave and continue to deliver safe and sterilized products.
Although Alec and Doug have only been using the loggers for a few months, they are already impressed with the ease of use with the device as well as the MadgeTech 4 software. They can easily view the data and compare it to the autoclave findings.
When asked to review MadgeTech’s Autoclave Validation Data Logging System, Doug was overcome with excitement to have his engineer walk into a company with the entire system stored securely in protective silver briefcase instead of carrying loggers around in a brown box.
