When it comes to injuries, many are quick to head to their local emergency room for what they deem “quick and exceptional care for their critical needs”. While this is exactly why emergency rooms exist, the problem healthcare faces today is that roughly $14 billion are lost due to unnecessary visits. A report from Truven Health Analytics shows that out of 6.5 million emergency room visits made by commercially insured individuals under the age of 65 in 2010, only 29 percent actually required immediate attention from the ER. Out of these visits, 41 percent received care from the ER that could have been provided in a primary care setting.

These clinics, unlike emergency rooms, allow patients to be seen in an urgent setting by their primary care physicians. With a personal physician, patients are able to receive the important care they need in a setting where physicians know patient history and have immediate access to individual patient records. Patients also see the benefits of an urgent care offering when it comes to financial responsibilities; the average ER visit can cost around $1,049, while the average doctor’s visit is around $153.
