Director of Photography Johanna Coelho and her production team were awarded Best LGBT Short at the Independent Filmmaker Showcase for their AFI Thesis Film. The film, Scaremonger, which debuted at a special screening last fall at the American Film Institute Conservatory, was also awarded Best Narrative Short at the California Short Films Festival this spring. It was recently selected by the Cinema City Film Festival in Serbia and the Costa Rica Film Festival in the Short Film Categories. The Scaremonger film was produced as an AFI Thesis Film by an international production team that consisted of: Director Sasa Numic from Serbia, Producer Tara Dales from South Africa, Screenwriter Cesar Turim from Brazil, Director of Photography Johanna Coelho from France, Production Designer Nicholas Donovan from the USA, and Editor Eirik Sandaker from Norway.
Coelho (johannacoelho.com) began her career as a Director of Photography in France where she was born and raised, and moved to Los Angeles in 2011 to join the prestigious AFI Conservatory Cinematography Program. Coelho speaks on her work and her burgeoning career: "Cinematography is a way to explore absolutely everything about this world. Humans, emotions, psychology, social issues, politics, or it can also be purely for visual enjoyment. Saying something visually is so powerful, it has no limits, there is endless ways to do it. I can shoot European style, I can shoot American style, I can shoot Euro-American style."
With two awards and plenty of positive reviews of her work under her belt, Coelho continues to forge ahead with projects that inspire her and give her an opportunity to showcase her vision and aesthetic. She recently wrapped a short film "Trouble In Paradise" with Girls on Top Productions, and a short film "You Try Living Here" by Writer/Director Karen Dee Carpenter. Girls On Top Productions' Writer/Creative Strategist Summer Brighton spoke highly of working with Coelho: "Watching Johanna work is like magic because she is so committed to her vision and telling the story authentically. She exudes an energy and passion for what she does, and the end result is spectacular."
What inspires this Director of Photography? Coelho states: "Everything. Everyone. Life inspires me. I am very curious. I always try to get into people's minds to understand why they are doing what they are doing, or why they make one choice rather than another. I feel the more I try to understand and feel people, the more I know how to tell my stories visually. Sometimes I feel my job is to be a visual psychologist." With a promising future ahead, Coelho plans to continue challenging herself by working on projects that inspire her and provide an opportunity to grow both professionally and artistically.
