SUB2r is a spin-off of a laser technology hardware startup in San Francisco, 2r1y Inc. Part of 2r1y’s core technology required an affordable USB 3.0 HD camera. Unable to find one with all of the functionality and control they needed, 2r1y had to build one. Creating a versatile digital camera from scratch took months of intensive effort. They overcame many technical challenges and built a solution functionally integrated into their core technology.
The company realized that there are many others that face the same challenge. They saw this as an opportunity to help people and companies save time and money in developing digital imaging technologies.
Starting with a blank whiteboard, they listed all the features they built and added functions others would want. Then they set an aggressive goal of 90 days and a strict budget to turn that list into a standalone product.
The result is an affordable USB3.0 camera with HD resolution, high frame rate, excellent sensitivity in low light, interchangeable optics, dual microphones, access to auxiliary inputs and outputs, and the ability to access and control core functions on the camera chip. They packaged this into a small, 1.75” cube, which is plug-and-play compatible with Windows 7/8. It is a complete camera, requiring no additional optics or supporting hardware.
The company’s hope is that an affordable, finished product with extensive set of features which gives users exclusive access to control of core functions will make it easier to develop digital imaging for robotics, machine vision, astronomy, bio-medical, motion detection, gaming, video-conferencing, and photo-enthusiasts.
SUB2r (sub2r.com) is targeting the release of this product to coincide with 2014 CES, January 6th.
