PRZOOM - /newswire/ - Rockville, MD, United States, 2013/08/06 - Whitaker Brothers unveiled the LS-1.2 prototype, the first laser shredder model introduced by the data destruction shredding industry - WhitakerBrothers.com.

The LS-1.2 is a shredder that utilizes laser technology to produce a destruction residue smaller than any production shredder intended for use with paper. Using a continuous wave laser beam, the machine ensures users that the entire piece of paper will be destroyed, guaranteeing the maximum amount of security for shredding. The laser ablation process is conducted by emitting electromagnetic radiation that converts a solid material into plasma, which instantly cools to produce a dust-like residue. The dusty residue takes up minimal space in the waste collection bin; therefore, users will spend significantly less time replacing residue bags.

Because the laser shredder produces high temperatures in the machine, Whitaker Brothers has created an evacuation system that produces negative airflow within the machine, therefore lowering machine temperatures. To ensure public safety, the evacuation system has two HEPA filters that filtrate CO2 and harmless vapors that come from the dust residue.

“After realizing how fast the security standards change, we decided to look beyond what we thought would be sufficient for just tomorrow, and started to look at what it would take handle the security needs of many years from now,” said Tim Collins, Director of Product Development. “We think the laser shredder represents a level of high security data destruction that will set the standard well into the next decade.”

The company will continue to modify the laser shredder and hope to expand the variety of multimedia that this machine is able to destroy. In the future, the prototype will be capable of shredding materials such as CDs, cell phones and solid-state (SSD) hard drives. Although the current prototype meant strictly for paper destruction is slated for a Q4 2014 launch, they plan on continuing development with a multimedia version in late 2015.
