EcoSpeed, Ti-Cycles and others collaborate in introducing a brand new urban cargo bike design. The CarGoAway - Utility Horse has room in the front for a whole lot of groceries plus an extra seat in the back for a few passengers. With the EcoSpeed mid-drive motor system integrated into the design it has the power to haul all of that load up the steepest hills.
The Utility Horse won the 2013 North American Handmade Bicycle Show Gates Belt Drive category as it is designed to include not 1 but 2 carbon fiber belt drive systems. Urban bike enthusiasts can appreciate belt drives because the belt drive system is clean (no grease to soil clothing), whisper-quiet and requires no maintenance. The custom EcoSpeed mid-drive motor means you can cruise at 20 mph on this bike, even up a hill, fully loaded, making it a great car-lite or car replacement urban vehicle with room for passengers and gear but still fully bike path legal.
The public will get a chance to see the Utility Horse in action this Saturday, June 13th at the Portland Disaster Relief Trials, an event that showcases the capabilities of cargo bikes in disaster response.
If you miss that event, the Utility Horse will also be on display at the Portland Art Museum for two Saturdays in August as part of the museum's Cyclepedia exposition. The first one, on August 3rd, Cargo Largo, will feature Portland's cargo bikes and the second, on August 24th, Ebike Saturday, will exhibit local electric bikes and trikes along with the gallery exhibit.
