ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market research consultancy, announced the release of a new 10-year market forecast of the worldwide consumption of light emitting diode (LED) linear tube lamps, which are used in general lighting new construction, retrofitting of existing (installed-based) and as a replacement for fluorescent lighting.
The worldwide consumption value of general lighting LED linear tube lamps reached $194 million in 2012. According to ElectroniCast Consultants, the consumption value is forecast to increase at an average annual growth rate of 23% (2012-2017) and 34.2 percent (2017-2022), to nearly $2.37 billion in 2022.
The American region is forecast to capture the lead in relative market share in a few of years; however, the Asia Pacific region (APAC) is set to eventually recapture the lead. The Europe, Middle East and African region (EMEA) is slower to pick-up this particular solid-state lighting solutions versus the other two regions; however, the EMEA region is forecast to climb at a faster pace.
“Compared to incandescent lighting, LED-based solid-state lighting (SSL) delivers visible light with reduced heat. In addition, its solid-state nature provides for greater resistance to shock, vibration, and wear, thereby significantly increasing its lifespan, which also translates to lower maintenance/labor expenses,” said Stephen Montgomery, the Principal Analyst- LED Practice at ElectroniCast Consultants. The term "solid state" refers to the fact that light in an LED is emitted from a solid object, that has do not contain moving parts or parts that can break, rupture, shatter, leak or contaminate the environment a block of semiconductor rather than from a vacuum or gas tube, as is the case in traditional incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent lamps.
The use of LED-based linear tube lamps used in the Commercial/Industrial general lighting application category is forecast to maintain the market share leader throughout the forecast period. The use in Government controlled general lighting segment is set to grow substantially in LED-based tube lamps global consumption.
The residential category includes MDUs (multiple dwelling units) as well as single family units; therefore lighting in large apartment complexes in parking areas, stairways and elevators are counted along with the under-the-cabinet lighting found in a growing number of residences. “This category is forecast for the fastest annual growth during the 2017 to 2022 time span, as LED-based linear lamps finally begin to show-up in the consumer (retail) market channel and single-family homes join in consumption,” Mr. Montgomery added.
