Ask About Risk today announced the launch of its free Health and Safety online knowledge database which is intended to be used by both Health and Safety Professionals and Business Owners who are responsible for the safety of their employees. The web-based resource provides a list of Hazards found in the workplace and controls that can be used to prevent or reduce the risk.
More than 5,500 people die each year across the EU through accidents that occur in the workplace (1) and last year 54 people lost their lives in Ireland alone(2) . The Health & Safety Authority estimates that the cost to the Irish economy of workplace accidents is more than €3bn every year(3) ; aside from direct costs such as fines, compensation, increased insurance costs there are also hidden costs such as loss of productivity, increased absenteeism and demotivation of staff which are attributable to such accidents.
This week saw the start of EU-OSHA’s European Safety Week 2012. This year’s theme is Working Together for Risk Prevention and the key theme of the campaign is Management Leadership & Worker Participation in Occupational Safety and Health.
The Ask About Risk website (askaboutrisk.com) provides an open community where members of the management team, workers and those whose role involves the management of risk in the organisation can not only view the extensive information provided by Ask About Risk but can also contribute to discussions, pose questions and share knowledge with each other and with Health and Safety experts at Ask About Risk.
Simon Coveney, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, met the founders of the Wiki to congratulate them on the website and to commend them on the role that the new site will play in contributing to improving worker safety.
One of the earliest users of the site, Peter Fleming of The Alcam Group said: “I found this an easy to use and an indispensable resource, particularly on a recent trip to the Middle East. The amount and quality of the information that is available to see is remarkable – it’s something that I will be using and contributing to a lot in the future!”
