The report includes all information necessary to understand the current dynamics in the energy storage market and particular the link between storage and solar PV. It includes information about markets, technologies and relevant price points for all advanced battery storage technologies as well as detailed commentary from company interviews during the Intersolar trade show and conference. The report is designed to make energy storage market potential visible and to provide decision-makers with accurate data on market development.
What was discussed regarding Market Development?
Most conversations suggested that it is still too early to really predict market size and growth. Interest is there and utilities as well as end customers are interested and pilot projects are currently being implemented.
In the last years solar PV was sold to customers as an investment. Energy storage – contrary to solar PV in the recent years – will not reach 5-6 years payback terms in the near future and will be more an investment in ''saving money'' rather than ''making money''.
Germany is widely seen as the market where grid-tied energy storage systems will find a niche first with other European markets following with some time lag. Germany will primarily see residential and small commercial systems. Larger scale storage for utilities or communities will not play a big role in the coming 3 years in Germany. Here the US and China are seen as more attractive markets. The announced subsidy program for residential energy storage solutions in Germany is expected to spur growth in the market and lead to decreasing prices.
Markets with grid stability problems will see adoption earlier than markets with a developed grid infrastructure. Utilities in most markets are estimated to strongly oppose the development of residential and small commercial systems because they deteriorate the customer base.
Incentives are currently being discussed in Germany but other markets do not show regulatory support or any movements towards such.
Primary sales channels in Germany are PV wholesale and distribution. Many Asian manufacturers team up with German PV wholesale companies or large inverter manufacturers. These two sales channels will predominately be used in the near to medium term.
The development of the EV market and e-mobility is seen as a critical step to bring prices down.
Most companies see the inflection point for the market with the end of renewable subsidies and the implementation of a smart grid infrastructure to support storage
