Mr. Papas joined a distinguished panel of employment specialists on the Tampa Bay Community Network (TBCN) for an hour long televised discussion of hiring practices that employer’s should observe. Mr. Papas was joined on the panel by Dan DeNisco, Senior Vice President at Robert Half Management Resources, Rebecca Lukban, a Field Service Manager for Oasis Outsourcing and James Goode, Supervisor of Teacher Recruitment for the Hillsborough County Public Schools. The panel discussion was moderated by Louise Thompson, the Executive Director of TBCN. The program can be seen on Tampa Bay Public Access Television, on the web or on You Tube.
Here are some important points to remember during the interview process: avoid questions about pregnancy, age, disability, heath, sexual orientation, religion, race or national origin. Use a uniform set of questions for each applicant who is interviewed and do not stray from the script. Avoid questions about hobbies, family, church membership, college attendance or military service since these could be viewed as coded questions intended to discover protected class information.
As a prospective employee, do not volunteer information about your religion, health issues, and dates of your education or membership in the National Guard or Reserves. If you volunteer this information you have opened the door to a discussion about the issues and you may not be offered a position because of the answers you volunteered. Try to stay as focused as possible on why you should be hired based on your personality, your knowledge of the job and the company and how well you will integrate with the company’s culture.
