The increasing identification requirements being placed on shellfish harvesters across the US is causing Allen-Bailey Tag & Label, Inc. to find new labeling solutions for its customers. “The industry standards are changing and we need to provide our customers with a tag or label that fits their needs while still complying with industry regulations,” states Richard Phelps, Partner & Director of Marketing at Allen-Bailey.
In order to achieve this Allen-Bailey has teamed up with William Kanitz, President of Scoring System, Inc. in Bradenton, FL to provide traceability software that works in combination with its custom designed tags. The tags are manufactured from durable synthetic material, printed with the harvester’s company branding on the back while the front is blank for imprinting harvesting information using software designed by Kanitz. The software, ScoringAg, enables a seafood harvester or processor to assign a 2D barcode to each batch of shellfish they handle to provide full traceback of that product to its source. The combination allows the harvester to market their product while complying with traceability requirements.
There is a tag on every bag of shellfish products delivered to a restaurant and every bag sold at the retail level. This process enables the consumer to trace where the seafood product was grown, harvested and/or processed. That is valuable information in the unlikely event someone becomes ill after eating the seafood, not only protecting the consumer but the harvester as well.
To learn the latest in seafood traceability requirements as presented by the FDA, Phelps will be attending the Interstate Seafood Seminar held in Cape May, NJ, April 17-19, 2012. “I have a responsibility to my customers to keep up to date on industry requirements, I can’t help solve their identification solutions unless I know the current issues,” states Phelps, who is also a member of the Traceability Committee of the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Commission based in Columbia, SC; a committee responsible for assessing the effectiveness of current traceback requirements.
Allen-Bailey Tag & Label, Inc. (abtl.com) is a 101 year old U.S. based corporation and has been providing Tyvek® and synthetic Shellfish Tags to growers, harvesters and processors on the East, West and Gulf coasts for more than four decades. It can also produce international seafood labeling for wholesalers and retailers. In 2011 Allen-Bailey launched a website, tracemyshellfish.com, devoted entirely to shellfish traceability and identification solutions.
