Strava, the brand that helps athletes all over the world experience social fitness—sharing, comparing and competing with each other's personal fitness data via mobile and online apps--announces a new cycling challenge. Strava has teamed up with one of the leading names in cycling, Specialized of Morgan Hill, California, on the Specialized Classic Climbing Challenge.
Scheduled to start March 15, 2012, the Specialized Classic Climbing Challenge will last until April 30th. Cyclists taking on the challenge will be tasked with piling on as much elevation as they can during 45 days. Those that manage to accumulate just over 100,000 feet will earn a custom water bottle and an award from Specialized. Entry in the challenge is free to anyone at Strava.com.
To put the Specialized Classic Climbing Challenge into perspective, to hit the total elevation gain of 105,312 feet requires riders to knock down the cumulative elevation of five Spring Classics three times over in just 45 days! That’s right, to complete the Challenge, riders must match the elevation of Milan-San Remo (6,250-feet), Tour of Flanders (5,709-feet), Paris-Roubaix (3,259-feet), Liège–Bastogne–Liège (10,883-feet) and Amstel Gold (8,993-feet) three times each, or one classic every three days for six weeks. Not an easy task, but one within reach of dedicated cyclists.
“Just like Specialized, Strava helps cyclists reach their full potential,” says Michael Horvath, CEO and co-founder of Strava. “This challenge speaks to the diehard riders out there who are looking for the extra motivation to ramp up their training, despite the inclement weather conditions the spring brings.”
Mike Sinyard, founder and CEO of Specialized personally looks forward to the challenge “Teaming up with Strava offers another reason to get riders out on bikes, which is something we’re always excited to do. I wouldn’t doubt if a bunch of us here in Morgan Hill hit that 105,000 foot goal.”
Free for any athlete to use, Strava (strava.com) also offers a Premium plan that brings features like leaderboard filters by age, weight and gender groups. Priced at just $6 per-month or $59 per-year, Strava Premium also provides enhanced heart rate, power analysis and deeper physiological reporting on the athlete’s performance.
