With online sales reportedly up 16% this past holiday season and more than 250 babies projected to be born every minute in 2012, an e-commerce site called StyleMyNursery.com should be a successful proposition if done right. The new internet retailer specializing in nursery décor ideas, baby rooms, crib sets, baby toys, trendy baby clothes and gifts is now open, and its founders hope that’s the case.
StyleMyNursery officially went live this year with its headquarters in a southwest suburb of Chicago and distribution across the full continental United States. StyleMyNursery uses a select assortment of infant product manufacturers, baby nursery design and toy suppliers, and independent craftspeople to sell everything from personalized clothing and crib bedding to mom gear.
“We found that some of the most basic nursery decorating and baby items were either hard to find or had little to no variety,” says Nicole Clark, one of StyleMyNursery’s advisory-stylists and a new mom, herself. “A few of us got to talking about how such a unique and special part of life has become so big-box and impersonal, and that’s how the ball got rolling. The idea is a constantly improving, unique store for mothers to go for the most unique part of their life- a place to personalize through baby and toddler toys, clothing, furniture and bedding. Whether it’s a color theme or ideas around a favorite cartoon character, the vision is a destination place for distinct nursery and baby décor.”
Some of the items available at StyleMyNursery.com that deliver on the store’s premise are design-your-own lampshades, an entire section that includes Eco Baby/Green products; hundreds of monogram and embroidery products that allow you to choose details such as stencil image and thread colors; and a full suite of iconic character nursery furnishings featuring Dr. Seuss™, Dora the Explorer™, Sesame Street™, Disney™ and even Nascar™. A variety of category menus are entirely targeted to mothers, with stylish nursing covers, diaper bags, totes and blankets. The gift section has dozens of books, toys, baby clothing and accessories especially for “big,” “little” or even “middle” brother or sister.
“We recommended that they come out of the gate with a strong selection but this is definitely just the beginning,” says Nick Tarant, an e-commerce marketing executive and a member of the store’s holding company board of advisors. “As their business grows and they start to build a community of moms through returning customers, a Twitter and Facebook presence and of course good word-of-mouth, they’re going to keep adding to the inventory based on a regular dialogue with shoppers.”
